The research and policy-oriented Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness (CGGC) at Duke University was created to provide a comprehensive framework that would facilitate the linking of global, national, and local levels of analysis in order to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of globalization on local development.
The work of the CGGC has received support from the National Science Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, the Kauffman Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Industry Canada, among other external sources.
The Center, directed by Duke Professor of Sociology Gary Gereffi, continues to utilize and expand on the global value chains perspective, which has drawn increasing recognition as a valuable tool in analyzing the way products are designed and developed, how they are brought to market and commercialized, and how the shifting dynamics of the global economy affect companies, institutions and workers.
