The Duke Population Research Institute (DuPRI), is a new institute in development at Duke University and an affiliate of SSRI, DuPRI is dedicated to the conceptual unification of the demographic sciences.
The demographic sciences draw deeply upon the social sciences, the biological sciences, and mathematics and statistics. As such, DuPRI's research centers include Duke faculty and research scientists from sociology, public policy, economics, biology, genetics, botany, applied and pure mathematics, the actuarial sciences, and the list goes on. DuPRI's board of directors, currently chaired by James W. Vaupel, recently issued this statement, "Although demography underlies most of the scientific disciplines, it rarely serves as the common thread of our academic discourse. We have found, especially now as part of DuPRI, that when demography is at the center of our discussions, the room for common ground and interdisciplinary synthesis is breathtaking."
DuPRI currently includes five research centers:
• The Center for Population Health and Aging (CPHA)
• The Center for Research on the Evolutionary Demography of Aging (CREDA)
• The Center for Social Demography and Ethnography (CSDE)
• The Chinese Populations and Socioeconomic Studies Center (CPSES)
• The Population, Policy and Aging Research Center (PPARC)
